As runners we have a lot more to worry about then just making sure we wear the correct shoes and slather on the sunscreen. We also need to be proactive about our own safety. There are several things you can do to make your run more safe.
1. Stay alert: I’m not going to tell you to skip the music altogether, because I know I rely on music to keep me pumped. However, I have made a conscious effort to just run with one ear bud in and the music low that way I can be aware of my surroundings.
2. Wear reflective material: This one is super easy to make happen, look for running gear with reflective tags or stripes.
3. Run with a partner when possible: Yes, I know a lot of you are “lone runners”. If you don’t want to run with a friend or your dog then at least make sure you’ve let someone know what route you plan to run.
4. Trust your intuition: If you feel uncomfortable running in a certain area, then DON’T RUN THERE.
5. Carry identification: I started wearing a Road ID Elite in January. It is a bracelet that has your identification and emergency contact information engraved on it.
I love how sleek and easy to wear it is. I haven’t ever had any issues with chaffing and I usually forget I’m even wearing it. Most importantly, I have peace of mind knowing that if something happened to me then the first responders would know how to contact my husband.
They have tons of other ID options including ankle IDs, shoe IDs and even necklaces. Go to RoadId.com to check out their great safety products.

I'm a follower of your blog. I would love to get a Road ID because I do a lot of trail runs and bike a lot of miles each week. Thanks!

And I "like"d Road ID on Facebook too.
Tricia, I love your giveaways, but don't twitter, so I likely can't ever win (which is fine). But I love my Road I.D., which I purchased when I started cycling. I wear it almost all the time now, as a reminder of my need for daily workouts, etc. Great idea to highlight it's benefits!
I just ordered my own Road ID today (the sport in purple) and would love to be able to get one for hubby! He would love the Elite in blue!

I think I really like the one for the shoes (in black) simply because I get annoyed by too much on my wrists/ankles. I'm a bit of a minimalist in that way.
Already follow your blog.
Already on FB with RoadID
For safety…I carry a small thing of pepper spray. It had a hook on it that I usually put on my Spibelt or the band of my shorts. Don't even know it's there and I'm prepared just in case.

Emailed my sister to let her know about it so she can get in on the action! Who would want to pass this one up?

I love the wrist band elite in the pink~
My tip would be to run in the daytime in popular areas where there are lots of people around~
Ankle ID original in Red. I hate stuff on my wrist, and the red so it will catch first responder's eyes (hopefully this will never have to be tested out).
I follow your blog.
I am a fan on FB.
I explicitly pick a route or time of day based on traffic to keep me safe. I also don't wear headphones when I run, except on the treadmill, so I can always hear what is going on around me (cars, people or otherwise).
I've been looking at these…would be great to win one…I like the Ankle ID in black
I'm also a follower of your blog!
Even though I listen to music when I run, for safety, it's always on pause when I'm on busier roads. Even though my earbuds are still in, I'm aware of what's around when in busier areas.

A safety tip I think about is to know the dogs on your route if you run where there are no leash laws. Carry dog biscuits!
I'd like the wrist elite. I have a shoe ID, but now have more than one pair of shoes so a wrist ID would work better.

My safety tip: Always tell someone where you're going and how long you think it will take you. That way they can come try to find you if you're out there too long.
I need Road ID really bad since I run alone in the mornings. i always take my keys and phone but I could really use the Wrist ID elite.
Love Road ID – I would definitely use the Wrist Elite!

I'd love a wrist id band in purple or red, or even an ankle band!
My safety tip has to do with what our mommies taught us in kindergarden…look both ways before you cross the street! I am always surprised at how many runners just tune out and just cross without even looking…and then get mad when they almost get hit!
Great giveaway! I would get the old fashioned Road ID with just my name, emergency contact, etc.

One good safety tip I've found is to always carry a few bucks with you in case you need to get a cab, or catch a bus when you're running in case you get hurt, get dehydrated, etc. The cash can also come in handy if you are dehydrated and need to stop for a sports drink.
I posted this giveaway on my blog!

Safety tip – always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back!
I'd say my biggest safety tip would be to NEVER run with headphones when you are on the street, it's hard to be aware of your surroundings when you can't hear.
My safety tips would be pretty much the same as yours. I always run with only one earbud, I let someone know where I am, or run with a partner. Oh and I carry Mace. For wayward weirdos or stray dogs.
I like the Elite ID … in black or blue.
I'm a follower!
My safety tips would be to always run facing traffic, and to only run on the shoulder of the road when there's plenty of room. I also, always take my engagement and wedding rings off before a run – no need to invite trouble!
I "liked" the Road ID Facebook page too!
Ooh, I've been thinking of getting one of these! My favorite is the road ID elite in purple!
My safety tip is for people who run on trails with a lot of bikers: Make sure to always look both ways before stopping, turning, and especially turning around. I've seen more than one person abruptly turn around and run smack into a bike that was about to pass them!
I like the elite id in blue.

Safety tip: I only use about 3 or 4 different running routes and my husband knows what each of them are. That way if something should happen he would know a pretty good idea of where to look for me. I also never run at night and if it's early morning, I only run in well-lit, public areas.
AND i fb status'd. whew

My safety tip: just the other day I needed to run well before sunrise (5am) and so I hit the sidewalks while carrying a small flashlight. One of those keychain ones that turns on when you press it with your thumb. It was perfect to shed some light on the subject and made me feel very safe.

A quick safety tip would be that I make sure to only wear one ear bud when running around places that I don't know too well. That way I can hear if something starts to happen and won't be too engrossed in my music or podcast.

Safety tip- runners on the LEFT side of the road!!
Always pay attention to your surroundings during a run by looking up and around every so often. I always expect cars and people are not going to heed to me running by.
I have been thinking about something like this and would love the ankle id in pink! What a great idea – my hubby is always worried about this sort of thing so it would put his mind at rest!

I always try to wear bright colors when I'm going to be out running, particularly when I'll be near roads. I also don't listen to an ipod when I'm out in the dark – it's much easier to be aware of what's around me that way!
Great idea!I tagged you with an award at my personal (not the weight loss) blog. allthingsandme@blogspot.com

Safety tip: When a dog is barking at you, STOP running, avoid eye contact, and calmly walk on your way. If you keep running the dog might either think you are running out of fear and they will chase, or they will think it looks fun and try and join in!
as cliche as this is….i dont go walking at night….well lit places where there are a lot of people is a lot safer for runners!
I like the wrist id sport.

My tip is to always be wary of cars while running on or near streets. If you wonder if a car sees you, assume they don't and if someone waves you across the street make sure to check the traffic coming in the other direction too!
I follow your blog!
Oh and a safety tip: when I run at night I carry an LED flashlight in my hand. They are light weight, batteries last a long time and the motion of it swinging back and forth in your hand is a lot more noticeable to motorist than a headlamp.

I think that the yellow sport Road ID wrist band is so cool. I think if there was a way to make it mandatory for all runners to wear one it would be great. I worry not only for myself but for my daughter in law who is a avid runner.
I have added you to my favorites so I can check in every day. Even at my age these running sites are very inspitational.
I am going to tell my sisters about your blog in our family blog and tip of the day.
I also went to face and posted a nice big "like" for the Road ID site. All these running blogs are maintained by young beautiful runners but that doesn't mean it can't motivate walkers as well.
Trying to win this AGAIN!! I like the wrist ID elite…black or pink maybe.

I too try to always leave with a predicted return time and let hubby know my route when I am running alone. I run with music, but keep it low. Sometimes I think about what if situations and what I would do in that momene.

good safety tip: when you're out on the roads and you hit a red light- for heavens sake- wait for the crosswalk! Or if you are crossing a crosswalk, remember that a car might come speeding down to turn right and might not be thinking to look for you. It's better to always be looking out for yourself. It know pace is important, but stopping or slowing down and watching out for yourself could save your life.
I have *got* to order one of these. I keep saying I'm going to, but I never do. When I'm squished like a bug on the pavement, I'll bet I wish I was wearing one. Among other things.
Thx for the reminder!

You've probably heard all of my safety tips by this point (run against traffic, don't wear headphones, be aware of your surroundings, wear reflective and light colors when running at dawn/dusk/night) – but the most important one is go with your gut instinct – if something doesn't feel right, get the heck away from where you are.

Tip: Always let someone know you are running and your ETA for finishing. I always let my hubby know what route I am taking and how long I should be gone. Then he gives me about 30 mins add-on before driving to take a look for me. I usually try to take a cell phone too! A few months ago, a horrible t-storm/tornado caught me off guard, was so glad hubby was able to pick me up QUICK!

My safety tip would be that when running on a road with traffic, I always run on the opposite side of the road so that I can see the traffic coming at me. Makes me too nervous to have traffic coming up right behind me.

Always let someone know where you are running, the specific route, when you'll return, and always make sure it's a safe area. ALWAYS watch for traffic no matter where you run. There are some crazy and speedy drivers out there even in places you don't expect them.
I follow your blog!
I like the Shoe ID in blue.
Always tell someone your running route before you head out!
I wear a lamp for running. I end up doing most of my running in the evening. And I live where there is alot of traffic. One time I was coming up on a shopping center turn lane, this guy in his car, was coming over into the turning lane and he wasn't watching. I stopped running and his car just slowly rolled to a stop just feet away from me. I yelled HEY!!! He looked up, the guy the was texting messaging!!!! The driver jumped and then he was apologizing ! I wear a highlighter yellow running shirt, lamp, carry my id, and a cell phone with me..

I feel that being aware of your surroundings while running is the best thing you can do for safety. Know where you are going and let someone else know when to expect you home. That way if you aren't there on time, they know there might be a problem.
I like the Sport in pink. I run alone and about to start training for a 1/2 after recovering from a stress fracture in my ankle so this would be perfect!

I think letting someone know what route you are going to be running before you leave, along with an estimated time on when you will be home is essential. That way you have someone looking out for you.
I like the Shoe ID in black. I already wear a Garmin and an iPod, so something else on my wrist probably wouldn't work…
And I'm a follower!

Running Safety tip:Be sure you can hear your surroundings. I love to run with music, but don't like to block out the outside world. I use AirDrives Interactive Earphones, which uses an outer ear design that lets me listen to music and hear the world.

My safety tip-always assume that cars aren't paying attention to you-even if you are well out of the road or in crosswalk, don't assume they'll "let" you have the right of way-too many times they don't!
I'd like to replace my handwritten shoe ID with a nice one!
Safety tip – I map out my route on dailymile.com and leave it up on my laptop if I'm going somewhere new (or tell the hubbs which normal route I'm doing) and make sure he knows when I left and when I expect to be back. Causes trouble sometimes if I decide I'm feeling good and decide to keep going but oh well.
I like the shoe pouch id. (it even comes in pink!)

I wish I could say I follow this advice all the time but it's a great idea to plan your route ahead of time and let your spouse or someone who will wonder where you are know where you're going and when you'll be back.
I want the pink RoadID Elite!
I have a medical allergy, so I need some kind of ID if anything happens.
I follow your blog through my RSS feed.
I like them on Facebook!
OMG I have wanted one of these for nearly a year now but I just haven't bucked up and bought one. Between buying shoes, clothes, etc. for running, the Road ID seems like something that can always wait while, in reality, it is the one thing every runner should have. I love the the Wrist ID Elite in pink – the rubber would keep it from getting stinky and gross and one is very unlikely to lose something attached to their wrist. Oh please, oh please, pick me!Thank you, thank you, thank you!PS I also "liked" Road ID on FB!

You can still see the unemployment levels are high even after a few years of the recession first hitting. I like the fact that they try to call it a double dip recession vs calling it a depression but if it goes down for travel a couple years, then goes up briefly should it "count" as wiping the slate clean…You can see the effects in the honeymoons industry as people did not have the disposable income to book cruises or other activities that cost a pretty heft entertainment fund. Same is true with global brands joining other brands such as flight center to recapture lost market share…whatever happens people need jobs or they will begin to riot…once the unemployment checks stop.
