Road Id Review and Giveaway

As runners we have a lot more to worry about then just making sure we wear the correct shoes and slather on the sunscreen. We also need to be proactive about our own safety. There are several things you can do to make your run more safe.

1. Stay alert: I’m not going to tell you to skip the music altogether, because I know I rely on music to keep me pumped. However, I have made a conscious effort to just run with one ear bud in and the music low that way I can be aware of my surroundings.

2. Wear reflective material: This one is super easy to make happen, look for running gear with reflective tags or stripes.

3. Run with a partner when possible: Yes, I know a lot of you are “lone runners”. If you don’t want to run with a friend or your dog then at least make sure you’ve let someone know what route you plan to run.

4. Trust your intuition: If you feel uncomfortable running in a certain area, then DON’T RUN THERE.

5. Carry identification: I started wearing a Road ID Elite in January. It is a bracelet that has your identification and emergency contact information engraved on it.
I love how sleek and easy to wear it is. I haven’t ever had any issues with chaffing and I usually forget I’m even wearing it. Most importantly, I have peace of mind knowing that if something happened to me then the first responders would know how to contact my husband. They have tons of other ID options including ankle IDs, shoe IDs and even necklaces. Go to RoadId.com to check out their great safety products.

Tricia, I love your giveaways, but don't twitter, so I likely can't ever win (which is fine). But I love my Road I.D., which I purchased when I started cycling. I wear it almost all the time now, as a reminder of my need for daily workouts, etc. Great idea to highlight it's benefits!

  8. I just ordered my own Road ID today (the sport in purple) and would love to be able to get one for hubby! He would love the Elite in blue!

I think I really like the one for the shoes (in black) simply because I get annoyed by too much on my wrists/ankles. I'm a bit of a minimalist in that way.

  16. NJ says:

For safety…I carry a small thing of pepper spray. It had a hook on it that I usually put on my Spibelt or the band of my shorts. Don't even know it's there and I'm prepared just in case.

One good safety tip I've found is to always carry a few bucks with you in case you need to get a cab, or catch a bus when you're running in case you get hurt, get dehydrated, etc. The cash can also come in handy if you are dehydrated and need to stop for a sports drink.

Safety tip – always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back!

  98. Allie says:

I'd say my biggest safety tip would be to NEVER run with headphones when you are on the street, it's hard to be aware of your surroundings when you can't hear.

  99. Ashley says:

My safety tips would be pretty much the same as yours. I always run with only one earbud, I let someone know where I am, or run with a partner. Oh and I carry Mace. For wayward weirdos or stray dogs.

  100. I like the Elite ID … in black or blue.

  101. I'm a follower!

  102. My safety tips would be to always run facing traffic, and to only run on the shoulder of the road when there's plenty of room. I also, always take my engagement and wedding rings off before a run – no need to invite trouble!

  103. I "liked" the Road ID Facebook page too!

  104. Ooh, I've been thinking of getting one of these! My favorite is the road ID elite in purple!

  105. My safety tip is for people who run on trails with a lot of bikers: Make sure to always look both ways before stopping, turning, and especially turning around. I've seen more than one person abruptly turn around and run smack into a bike that was about to pass them!

Safety tip: I only use about 3 or 4 different running routes and my husband knows what each of them are. That way if something should happen he would know a pretty good idea of where to look for me. I also never run at night and if it's early morning, I only run in well-lit, public areas.

My safety tip: just the other day I needed to run well before sunrise (5am) and so I hit the sidewalks while carrying a small flashlight. One of those keychain ones that turns on when you press it with your thumb. It was perfect to shed some light on the subject and made me feel very safe.

  190. I follow your blog! :-)

  191. Oh and a safety tip: when I run at night I carry an LED flashlight in my hand. They are light weight, batteries last a long time and the motion of it swinging back and forth in your hand is a lot more noticeable to motorist than a headlamp.

  192. If I had a road ID I'd wear the elite black…

I think that the yellow sport Road ID wrist band is so cool. I think if there was a way to make it mandatory for all runners to wear one it would be great. I worry not only for myself but for my daughter in law who is a avid runner.

  227. me/mom/NANA says:

good safety tip: when you're out on the roads and you hit a red light- for heavens sake- wait for the crosswalk! Or if you are crossing a crosswalk, remember that a car might come speeding down to turn right and might not be thinking to look for you. It's better to always be looking out for yourself. It know pace is important, but stopping or slowing down and watching out for yourself could save your life.

I wish I could say I follow this advice all the time but it's a great idea to plan your route ahead of time and let your spouse or someone who will wonder where you are know where you're going and when you'll be back.

OMG I have wanted one of these for nearly a year now but I just haven't bucked up and bought one. Between buying shoes, clothes, etc. for running, the Road ID seems like something that can always wait while, in reality, it is the one thing every runner should have. I love the the Wrist ID Elite in pink – the rubber would keep it from getting stinky and gross and one is very unlikely to lose something attached to their wrist. Oh please, oh please, pick me!Thank you, thank you, thank you!PS I also "liked" Road ID on FB!

You can still see the unemployment levels are high even after a few years of the recession first hitting. I like the fact that they try to call it a double dip recession vs calling it a depression but if it goes down for travel a couple years, then goes up briefly should it "count" as wiping the slate clean…You can see the effects in the honeymoons industry as people did not have the disposable income to book cruises or other activities that cost a pretty heft entertainment fund. Same is true with global brands joining other brands such as flight center to recapture lost market share…whatever happens people need jobs or they will begin to riot…once the unemployment checks stop.
